The Woodstock Arms Bed and Breakfast is located in the
scenic village of Inistioge in County Kilkenny, just a two hour drive from
Dublin.
Inistioge is centrally located as it is two hours from Dublin on
the N9 and 30 minutes from both Kilkenny and Waterford cities. Also we are only
two hours also from Cork City. Kilkenny City is a beautiful city for shopping
with several boutiques and the Kilkenny design centre which has all the local
crafts for sale all under the one roof. The centre is located opposite Kilkenny
castle which is open to the public and a tour of the castle is a must.
New Ross is 20 minutes away and is the home of the
Dunbrody ship and Visitor centre and JFK Arboretum and park ,the Dunbrody
ship carried JFK's grandparents to the USA.
In Thomastown which is 10 minutes away from Inistioge is Mount Juliet,
venue to the World Golf Championship- American Express Championship in 2002 &
2004,won by Tiger Woods and Ernie Els. Mount Juliet also held the Irish Open for
a number of years. Within 30 minutes drive there are no less than 12 other golf
courses.
The River Nore flows through the village and is tidal up to the village. The
fishing is generally good and a licence can be had easily from the local fishing
club at a small charge. Salmon and Trout are the most common catch.
The Film Circle of Friends and Widow's Peak were made in the village in 1993 and
1994. Bringing such movie stars as Mia Farrow, Chris O'Donnell, Minnie Driver,
Adrian Dunbar, Joan Plymouth and our very own Mick Lally. Photographs from these
films are on display in our bar.
Woodstock Park, now the subject of massive restoration with aid from the E.U.
and FAS. The Gardens and forest of Woodstock Estate are presently part of the
Tighe Estate. The forest is currently under a long term lease to Coille
Teoranta, the State forestry Company which has sole responsibility for its
management. The Gardens however are under the guidance of Kilkenny Country
Council. The house at Woodstock was built in 1745 by Francis Bindon, Woodstock
House was an important seat in County Kilkenny for over 150 years.
The estate
at its prime was well over 1600 acres now its a little over 1000. The estate is
filled with walks through the gardens which measure some 50 acres. In this you
will find a vast array of plants, shrubs and trees many of which are not native
to this country e.g. a masterful Californian Red Wood and the longest monkey
