There is also a quaint coffee and craft shop called "The Old School House" in
the village opposite the river, opens March to October. here they serve
everything from soup to fresh wild nore salmon to homemade cakes.
The village has its own local Bric A Brac shop
run by local man Billy Ashe. Here you will find all sorts of treasures.
There is a festivals running at present, the Vintage Rally which brings
vintage cars, bikes and machinery from the four corners of Ireland. it is held
on the Sunday of the August Bank Holiday Week-End.
The River Nore flows through the village and is tidal up to the village. The
fishing is generally good and a licence can be had easily from the local fishing
club at a small charge. Salmon and Trout are the most common catch.
The Film Circle of Friends and Widow's Peak were made in the village in 1993 and
1994. Bringing such movie stars as Mia Farrow, Chris O'Donnell, Minnie Driver,
Adrian Dunbar, Joan Plymouth and our very own Mick Lally. Photographs from these
films are on display in our bar.
Woodstock Park, now the subject of massive restoration with aid from the E.U.
and FAS. The Gardens and forest of Woodstock Estate are presently part of the
Tighe Estate. The forest is currently under a long term lease to Coille
Teoranta, the State forestry Company which has sole responsibility for its
management. The Gardens however are under the guidance of Kilkenny Country
Council. The house at Woodstock was built in 1745 by Francis Bindon, Woodstock
House was an important seat in County Kilkenny for over 150 years.
The estate
at its prime was well over 1600 acres now its a little over 1000. The estate is
filled with walks through the gardens which measure some 50 acres. In this you
will find a vast array of plants, shrubs and trees many of which are not native
to this country e.g. a masterful Californian Red Wood and the longest monkey
puzzle walk in Europe.
